When Silence Makes You ResponsibleMost of us know that lying is wrong. That part isn't particularly complicated. But what if you know the truth and simply choose not to say anything?
There is a law tucked away in Leviticus that I don't remember paying much attention to before: “When someone sins in any of these ways: If he has seen, heard, or known about something he has witnessed, and did not respond to a public call to testify, he will bear his iniquity.” — Leviticus 5:1

One of the easiest mistakes we can make when reading the Mosaic Law is assuming that every command is simply a rule to obey. Yet many of the laws reveal something far deeper. They reveal the heart of the God who gave them. One of the most overlooked examples is a law about a bird's nest.
Why Study the Law If We Are Under Grace?
Many Christians avoid the Old Testament Law because they rightly understand that we are not saved by keeping it. Others read the Law only as a list of rules that no longer apply. Yet Scripture presents a different picture. The Law remains valuable—not as a means of justification, but as a revelation of the heart and character of God. The psalmist declares, "Oh how I love your law!" (Psalm 119:97). David was not celebrating legalism. He was delighting in what the Law revealed about the God who gave it. As followers of Jesus, we are not called back under the Law as a covenant of salvation. We are saved by grace through faith. Christ has fulfilled the Law on our behalf, accomplishing what we never could. Yet the Law still teaches us. It still reveals God's priorities. It still exposes our hearts. Most importantly, it still shows us what righteousness looks like. |
